Pentalys Energy awarded 5 MNOK by the Research Council of Norway to scale its battery separator

Pentalys Energy has been awarded 5 MNOK through the Research Council of Norway's Verification programme for the project RUSH: Rapid Upscaling of lithium-sulfur and li-metal battery separator. The funding is directed at one specific development: taking our technology from a proof-of-concept to a validated, scalable product.

The separator is the component that sits between the two electrodes in a battery cell. In lithium-sulfur cells it also has to do something a conventional separator does not, namely stop dissolved polysulfides from migrating to the lithium side, where they cause the capacity loss that has held the chemistry back for decades. Pentalys Energy's nanoengineered coating addresses this, and the same material is relevant for lithium-metal cells, since the separator will also ensure safe operation and mitigate dendrite formation in these batteries.

The Verification programme supports exactly this stage of a technology's life, where the science is established but the commercial route is not yet demonstrated at relevant scale. For Pentalys Energy, the grant means the upscaling work can be run in parallel with ongoing commercial discussions, which shortens the path to integrating our separator into high-performance battery cells.
